Today we travel to Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, particularly its picturesque colonial district. This corner of the city exudes colonial history hundreds of years we can see among other things, at the Museo de las Casas Reales, Santo Domingo Fortress and the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria. These colonial treasures we find the wonderful Church of the Mercedes. Are we going to know?

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy is one of the historic sites of Santo Domingo’s most recognised and has been one of the most important temples of India in colonial times.

It was built around 1530 and plundered by Sir Frances Drake, the famous English pirate, just finished construction. It was rebuilt but was hit by hurricanes and earthquakes on several occasions, so it is a church rich in history and that still remains standing is an attribute itself.

At first his style was the Gothic type, with a baroque altar Ornement in silver, and a series of small chapels inside. Through the changes and was undergoing renovations added two Gothic arches, a vaulted ceiling and a majestic bell tower.

In 1910 the back of the church was converted into a convent. Much of the Gothic splendor of the past was lost at the hands of the renovations incurred after the earthquakes, but the church retains its beauty and appeal.

September 24 is the feast of the patroness of the Dominican, Our Lady of Mercy. The tradition of celebrating this date back to 1615 and has continued until today, when the Church receives hundreds of devotees and perform typical celebrations include several Masses during the day, the blessing of the waters and a procession starting the temple throughout the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
